When I was a kid, my family flew to the United States, bought a van, and then drove down to Costa Rica, where we were living at the time. On our way from the USA to Costa Rica, we drove through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. I was quite young, but I do remember the trip.
In 2016, I returned to Nicaragua as an adult. I went on a Christian mission trip with my mom, and we visited several churches on the east coast of the country. We were able to explore some urban and rural areas.
We flew from Managua, the capital city, to Bluefields, one of the largest cities on the east coast.

From Bluefields, we traveled by panga to several other locations along the east coast. A “panga” is a medium-sized, outboard-powered, open boat, used for traveling and fishing.

We went to Pearl Lagoon. I enjoyed the stillness there.

We went to the area of Ratipura, Awas, and Haulover. I got to see horses and ride in an auto rickshaw.

We went to Set Net Point. This small community is located on a peninsula, quite a ways from other towns and villages.

We went to Kakabila. It was peaceful there, and I enjoyed the ocean views.

We went to Brown Bank. It’s called that because of its muddy coastline.

We went to La Fe. It is located further inland than the other places we visited.

We went to Orinoco. It is more developed than some of the nearby areas.

We went to Tasbapauni. It has boats, beaches, and lots of animals roaming around, including pigs.

We went to Kukra Hill. There were many colorful houses there.

We returned to Bluefields, and then we flew to Corn Island. Popular beaches and stunning sunsets.

After a few days, we took a panga to Little Corn Island. Rocky coastline and hermit crabs.

We eventually made it back to Managua, and then flew home.
Nicaragua has towns, jungles, beaches, animals, and good food. It’s a great place to see and explore.
