In September of 2024, I took a trip to the Galapagos Islands. To get there, I went on Tourradar’s “Galapagos Discovery (9 days)” tour. I flew into Quito, Ecuador, and then took a flight over to San Cristobal Island.
On San Cristobal Island, I walked down to the beach, where I spotted sea lions, marine iguanas, and Sally Lightfoot crabs.

With my tour group, I walked around the island a bit, seeing various kinds of cacti. Then we went snorkeling at Tijeretas. It was surprisingly cold, but we still swam for a while and saw some fish, sea turtles, and sea urchins.

On my second day on San Cristobal, I took a trip to Isla Lobos, where I saw nesting Magnificent Frigatebirds and Blue-footed Boobies.

The next day, we traveled by speedboat to Santa Cruz Island. We went to the highlands and saw Galapagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat.

The following day, we traveled by speedboat to Isabela Island, the largest of the Galapagos Islands. I took a trip to Las Tintoreras, where I saw Galapagos penguins, and snorkeled with sea turtles, sea lions, and whitetip reef sharks. It was an incredible experience.

On our second day on Isabela, we took a bus to the highest part of the island, where the Sierra Negra Volcano is located. We hiked up to the crater, where we enjoyed spectacular views. The round-trip hike took about 6 hours.

I explored Isabela on my own for a bit, and I saw mangroves and abandoned vessels. I also saw plenty of marine iguanas.

We made our way back to Santa Cruz Island via speedboat. We went to Playa de Los Dogs, where we saw nesting Blue-footed Boobies. We also went swimming at Las Grietas.

On our last day in the Galapagos Islands, we made our way to Baltra Island, where we saw yellow land iguanas.

We flew from Baltra to Quito, and from Quito I made my way back home.
The wildlife I observed in the Galapagos Islands was amazing and unique. Among the fauna that made my trip unforgettable were the many finches I saw. These endemic birds are truly remarkable.

While there are many places in this world to explore, few compare to the wonderland that is the Galapagos Islands.
